Ascertaining an appropriate salary or remuneration for executive leadership positions is complex. When compiling a data set to reference for each role, it is usual to consider at least the following:
- The industry and similar industries
- The organisation’s type, size, complexity and performance
- The location and geographical scope of the business
- All roles with similar responsibilities and key performance metrics
- All roles in similar geographical locations
- All individuals in similar roles similar skills and levels of experience
A combination of all of these factors influence the salary and remuneration package of a particular executive position. Compounding the complexity of ascertaining an appropriate salary and remuneration guide, many organisations are privately owned and do not publicly disclose their executive team’s remuneration. This makes comparisons difficult to reference. It is also true that for senior executives, it is usual for the level of performance-based pay to increase as a portion of the total remuneration. An executive’s responsibility increases, and given there is such a wide variety of different performance pay schemes, this makes ascertaining an appropriate level of a total remuneration package which will include short and long term incentives, more difficult.
